CCTV Systems at Wild Place Project

Wild Place Project

Wild Place Project includes the Bear Wood exhibit, 7.5 acres of ancient woodland which is home to European brown bears, European grey wolves, Eurasian lynxes and wolverines. Thousands of visitors view and experience the animals each year by walking a 700-metre walkway that stands up to 4 metres high throughout the woodland.

Project Requirements

Bristol Zoological Society required a CCTV solution that would provide coverage of all the animal enclosures, woodland boundaries, and the visitor walkway.

In designing the solution we needed to deliver an outcome that would allow our clients to monitor:

  • The visitor walkway to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the visitors, as well as staff and volunteers, during opening times.
  • Inside the enclosures to check against environmental factors such as storm damage and fallen trees.
  • The animals themselves to check for wellbeing and behaviour.
  • The integrity of the boundary fence line for each enclosure.

Our Solution

We held multiple meetings with all departments of the Society that would be responsible for the animal welfare, site-wide security and public safety. The time and attention required to survey the CCTV system was paramount to the final design and choosing the right manufacture for this particular project.

The manufacture we identified was IDIS. This was due to the quality and focal capabilities of the cameras and the software that IDIS provide. From a cost prospective it was the most expensive of all the options put forward, however the quality and functionality offered best met the requirements of our client.

Feedback

Upon completion of the project, Bristol Zoological Society’s head of IT Adam Evans commented:

“We’re really pleased with the end result. The new CCTV set up has made it so much easier to monitor the enclosures. KIS Fire & Security were excellent throughout, very knowledgeable and very professional.”
